Tourist Sites Check Out Recreation Fishing: Lake Guntersville is Alabama’s largest lake (69,000 acres). It was created in 1938 when the Tennessee Valley Authority dammed portions of the Tennessee River to provide flood control and low cost hydroelectric power for an area to be known as the Tennessee Valley .It starts up near Chattanooga, Tennessee, passes thru Scottsboro to the dam, just a few miles from Guntersville, Alabama (approximately 82 miles). Today, Lake Guntersville is nationally known for largemouth bass and has been the site of the National Bass Master’s Tournament. Additionally, other favorite catches include: smallmouth bass, spotted bass, white crappie, black crappie, bluegill, shellcracker, longear sunfish, green sunfish, blue catfish, channel catfish, flathead catfish, bullhead catfish, sauger, hybrid bass and white bass. Rough fish include spotted gar, longnose gar, freshwater drum, carp and buffalo. Baitfish are skipjack herring, gizzard shad, threadfin shad, yellowtail shad and several species of minnows. For a listing of the major Hunting areas & seasons click here Hunting is great in Jackson County with plentiful Deer, Turkey Duck, Geese, Dove Rabbit, Squirrel, Quail and more. There are many Docking Facilities available in Jackson County, Goosepond Colony & Jackson County Park are among the best. Fishing is world class, and skiing on the lake in and around Scottsboro is simply great. Caving: Jackson County is home to nearly 1500 charted caves, over half of all the caves in the state.
